Macular Degeneration Management in Illinois

evaluation & ongoing monitoring

What is Age-Related Macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease that affects the macula, the central portion of the retina responsible for detailed vision. It most commonly affects adults over age 50 and can gradually impact reading, driving, and recognizing faces. At Illinois Eye Associates, we provide thorough evaluation and ongoing monitoring for dry and wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Dry vs. Wet Macular Degeneration

There are two primary forms of AMD: dry and wet. While both affect the central retina, they progress differently and require different management approaches.

  1. Dry AMD is the more common form and typically progresses slowly over time. It occurs when small yellow deposits (called drusen) build up beneath the retina, leading to gradual thinning of the macula.
  2. Wet AMD is less common but more aggressive. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, leading to rapid changes in vision. Wet AMD requires prompt referral to a retinal specialist for treatment.

the importance of Early Detection

Macular degeneration often develops gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in its earliest stages. Medical eye exams allow us to:

  • Identify early retinal changes

  • Monitor disease progression over time

  • Detect conversion from dry to wet AMD

  • Coordinate care promptly when advanced treatment is required

Our goal is to preserve central vision for as long as possible through consistent surveillance and evidence-based management.

Advanced Retinal Imaging & OCT Diagnostics

Accurate monitoring of macular degeneration requires more than a standard eye exam. We utilize:

  • Retinal Imaging to document structural changes in the macula

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to capture high-resolution cross-sectional images of retinal layers

  • Detailed macular evaluations during dilated exams
